Back in 1946 I had a dream.
This dream consisted of organizing bodybuilders around the world, into one strong and unified international federation...

Ben Weider, President, IFBB

IFBB and it's first 6 Mr. Universe winners

The championship is held annually in 50 countries. The first IFBB Mr. Universe competition took place in 1959. The winner of the 1960 contest kept the title for 2 years in a row - there were no competition in 1961, because the exact politics of IFBB hasn't been determined. Since 1962 - a new Mr. Universe appears on the stage.

By Ben Weider, Muscle Builder, April 1966
From 1959 – 1975 following three (3), but sometimes two (2) height categories were implemented:

Short Class: 5'5" (165 cm)
Medium Class: 5'8" (172 cm)
Tall Class: over 5'8" (over 172 cm)

Starting 1976 the Short, Medium, and Tall classes were changed to:

Lightweight: 75kg
Middleweight: 90kg
Heavyweight: over 90kg

Also, the IFBB Congress decided to end the "Overall Winner" award and instead, declare that each class winner would be called a "World Champion"

The term "Mr. Universe" officially ceased to exist and was changed to "World Bodybuilding Championships".

From 1959 – 1975 inclusive the winners of the different classes were not considered Mr.Universe. The actual title only went to the overall winner. There was no overall winner from 1976 – 1995 inclusive, and each class winner was considered a Mr.Universe or World Champion. From 1996 to the present, there is an overall winner, considered the Overall World Champion, however each class winner is still considered a World Champion.
